Hi Peter,

Thanks for the link. I read your article (not all the links, though — I'll try to return later). I  found your article raised many interesting points with respect to a so-called resource based economy. I am not an economist, nor do I have any expertise in the study of social structures, however, my intuition tells me there must be some form of hybrid social structure/system that can provide basic goods to all citizens (i.e. basic food, shelter, and modest housing including utilities) just for showing up on the planet. Beyond these basics, I think perhaps a monetary system makes some sense, in order to sort out the supply and demand needs and desires of the society and also to satisfy the needs and desires of those members of society who are driven to over-achieve (while also allowing the less driven or less able in society to simply exist on the basic handouts that the society supplies for free and without condition). That said, I suspect the creation of paper money out of thin air is not the best way to handle the supply of money in this hybrid society. Having a central bank that at least maintains a scarce commodity (such as gold) proportional to the amount of money in circulation, while not ideal, at least offers some protection for the value ascribed to the money.

Clearly, the monetary system we have in place right now is not working! So how do we evolve something better? And how do we do so with the least amount of suffering?

Namaste,

Mathew

You have good questions. Maybe it's our duty to find out and build something better :-)

There are some models that are fair and just in some of those links. There is enough resources in this planet if we focus on creating something together instead of against each other.

Yes, I agree. But it's such a daunting task. Especially when one proposes to introduce (some) socialized systems into capitalist societies. Ultimately, the wealthy will be called upon to subsidize the under-achievers and the needy. Tough to expect a wealthy person (or anyone, for that matter) to agree to do this when they haven't yet learned the truth that we are all One – that what I do to help you, I am really doing to help myself.

We saw BOTH of the Zeitgeist movies yesterday. Not that I
haven’t heard about the theories before, but I am still puzzled.. can’t
really find words. I mean, whatever it is (I am rather a believer of
what I saw), it IS important that we humans see the other side of  the coin,
isn’t it!

It reminds me so much of the initiation of the second world war, where many germans (I am german, by the way) knew what was really going on, but kind a or couldn’t believe it, or where just static, not moving, and let others do history - which they did.

Can’t find more words, yet….

Hi Silke,

I think that is an interesting parallel you make about the many Germans who stood by and did nothing. I think we are still repeating that behavior to a great extent with respect to the many humanitarian crisis’ that persist in the world today – many African nations immediately come to mind – Rwanda, Congo, Zimbabwe, etc.

I think that unlike second world war Germany, however, a lot of what the Zeitgeist movies do (that is if they don’t necessarily stir us to take action), is that in the least, they prepare us on some level to give up our attachments to the long-standing human systems that we have relied upon for centuries. I don’t know anyone who wants to see the monetary system(s) collapse, however, if the nations of the world do go bankrupt, I think we will be better prepared psychologically having seen films like Zeitgeist. Same for the religious institutions, should they crumble to dust, I think people will be better prepared. Anyway, that’s my two cents worth for now. Thanks for sharing.

“o give up our attachments to the long-standing human systems”.. Right!

That’s what I like about the “intent of a proposal” in the Addendum. Even if I don’t know about “Venus project”, neither understand whether the technology is the ultimate answer, other alternatives, also mentioned in the movie,  have been crossing my mind, I mean, a lot of peoples mind. Renewable energy, being somehow more independant (if possible).

Fun sharing this here with you!

Take care,

Silke

Yes – I agree! I took a look at the Venus Project website – didn’t really resonate for me. (I think it was WAY over my head.) Nevertheless, like you and many others (as you say), the situations and possible solutions are on my mind too. I think just by that alone (many people with their attention focused on these issues), inspirations and positive changes are bound to begin to manifest around the world.
