For me, it was a spooky encounter with a ghost back in 1982. The story is posted here. (Read only if you are not easily scared by things that go bump in the night! :-)

Men, you are playing with fire, brother, what do you expect to get..?
Now, honestly, I don’t know whether you’ve found believing in God by know (this is coming from an atheist.. mmhm, non-religionist.. but I do believe in God) - but you play with evil spirit’s and expect heavenly results?
That is, what you’ve attracted. Tell me, what had happened in the meantime… from 20 to now? Has your faith changed?
LOL – well, as a born skeptic and atheist, I didn’t believe in God or spirit (either good or bad). After the poltergeist encounter, I believed in spirit – but still hadn’t quite reconciled God. A year later, I had an encounter with the Grim Reaper (or my ego, as you might prefer to say), nevertheless, I learned a lot from that encounter, but still, I didn’t truly find God until Jesus appeared in a room and prayed with me a year later (at 23). I have posted accounts of these three experiences in different parts of my blog – but the most succinct one that discusses all three can be found here.
To answer your question, after Jesus’s dramatic appearance, well, I mistakenly believed I didn’t have to have faith because I knew there was God. Little did I know, faith has much more to do with understanding the nature of God than knowing that God exists. Thus, in the years that followed, I gradually began to learn bit by bit about faith to the point where I now realize that this journey into faith is one that never ends! Sure makes life interesting though!
